Raleigh Academy of Chinese Language (RACL) is going to offer two new math classes: 1. Math Olympics Competition (grades 9+) – Teacher: Dr. Peter Diao and 2. Math Problem Solving (grades 4~5): – Teacher: Emily Wen in 2016 Fall Semester.
Math Olympics Competition (grades 9+) – Teacher: Dr. Peter Diao
This class is geared towards motivated math students who are eager to transition from doing well in short answer problems to being able to tackle proofs in mathematics. It aims to develop proper foundations for students who would like to one day become great computer scientists, statisticians, physicists, economics, mathematicians, or specialize in any of a number of areas that rely heavily on theoretical math. Proofs will be taught in the areas of Algebra, Combinatorics, Number Theory, and elementary aspects of Calculus. General methods for developing mental concentration, problem solving abilities, and love of learning will be taught. Competition methods suitable for the USAMO, USAJMO, and AIME level will also be covered. A strong foundation in algebra and middle school level competition method is highly recommended.
Teacher Description: Hi! My name is Peter Diao and I just moved to RTP. I really enjoy mathematics and like teaching math. I have a math PhD from Stanford and math major from Princeton, and participated in MOSP twice in high school. I was also a captain of the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology math team in high school and have taught math at university, high school, and middle school levels in the past. I am looking forward to meeting kids who already love math or are curious to go deeper into the world of math.
RACL’s school calendar follows the traditional calendar of the Wake County Public School System. RACL Fall semester activity classes will start from September 10th, 2016, at 11:10am on each Saturday. Our staff will provide on-site registration and other associated services to all students and their families.

Math Problem Solving (grades 4~5): – Teacher: Emily Wen
This course is designed to expose students to the beauty of problem solving, to foster mathematical creativity and genuine interest, and to give students the foundation they need to excel in math contests. In addition, through this course students will learn that math is fascinating, exciting, and most of all fun!
Some of the topics and concepts that will be covered are Number Patterns, Divisibility, Fractions, Experimenting, Logic Reasoning, and Puzzles. Each class, a specific topic and strategy will be taught. Then, students will work on problems to reinforce the concepts. To instill a love for math, each class will include logic puzzles or math games to invoke students’ interests and build critical thinking skills.
Teacher Description (Emily Wen): I love math and have rich experiences in math competitions. I’m looking for opportunities to instill the same love for math in young kids and to prove that math can be and is fascinating. I am a current junior at NCSSM and taught “Math Problem Solving” at Champion Learning Academy for 4th-5th graders. I am -2014 National MathCounts participant, -2016 USAJMO qualifier, -performed well in a variety of math and science competitions including State Math, ARML, AMC series, state and national Science Olympiad, and many more.
